Prototype system sniffs out soil health with results in five minutes

Envirotec Magazine

An electronic nose to sniff out soil health that will deliver results to a farmer’s phone in five minutes is being developed by PES Technologies. The company says it is able to create an aroma fingerprint from gas released by microbes in the soil. Jim Bailey of PES Technology at the Agri-TechE REAP Conference 2023.

COVID-19 drugs persist in wastewater, and may pose risk to aquatic organisms

Envirotec Magazine

This diverts the wastewater from Spring Creek and allows the soil to act as a natural filter for any chemical residuals that remain in the wastewater (image credit: Heather Preisendanz, Penn State). However, naproxen concentrations detected in effluent were at levels that could pose a low-to-medium risk to aquatic organisms.

Brazilian group presents novel method of analyzing microplastic pollution

Envirotec Magazine

Most studies present conclusions based on numbers of particles as if they were environmentally equivalent regardless of size, volume, mass or surface area. In addition, MPs also form a plastisphere that serves as a substrate for organisms and disperses these organisms to other environments, with consequences for global health.”

Introducing Planetary Variables: Soil Water Content, Land Surface Temperature, and Vegetation Biomass

Planet Pulse

Much of the work we have done to produce these feeds draws on the use of passive microwave sensors, which provide unique insight in measuring water content in soils and vegetation. We developed relationships with customers like the Dutch Water Authorities , who use Soil Water Content data to keep track of flooding threats.

Understanding Soil Carbon Science To Identify Strategies For Climate Mitigation And Adaptation

Energy Innovation

Soil scientists strongly disagree about whether soil carbon sequestration (SCS) can effectively help to decarbonize the atmosphere. Other organizations, by contrast, promote the same practices as necessary for natural climate solutions. Debate is critical for addressing uncertainties related to building soil carbon.
