What happens to an office building’s electricity demand when almost everyone who works there is stuck at home? The coronavirus pandemic has forced broad swaths of the economy to shut down, as state after state forced non-essential businesses to close. The result has been significant drops in electricity demand in big commercial centers like New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area , and forecasts that commercial energy usage across the country will decline by 4.7 pecent this year.

With the first wave of the energy transition, renewable energy sources (such as solar and wind) have begun replacing coal power generation. However, some sectors are lagging behind and struggling to decarbonize more than others, including large-scale transportation like commercial aviation, shipping, and rail transit. Electrofuels (aka eFuels) are the next generation of solutions to help the hardest-to-abate sectors pivot from their reliance on fossil fuels.

The path to a fully decarbonized energy system in Europe could depend on technologies that are out of bounds in today’s market, a consultancy forecast suggests. The major decarbonization pathways modeled by Afry (formerly AF Pöyry), an international engineering, design and advisory firm, envision big contributions from either new nuclear or carbon capture and storage (CCS) — neither of which is an energy system front-runner at present.

Researchers from The University of Tokyo claim to have successfully increased a lithium-ion battery’s voltage and its ability to suppress dangerous conditions that affect today’s batteries. Their paper is published in Nature Energy. “A battery’s voltage is limited by its electrolyte material. The electrolyte solvent in lithium-ion batteries is the same now as it was when the batteries were commercialized in the early 1990s,” said Professor Atsuo Yamada.
