The water utility industry is glacial in its adoption of technology. There is evidence of this in never-ending pilot projects with startups that lead nowhere and in product design crowdsourcing campaigns that take a year and end up with products that remind one of the failed healthcare.gov project. But change the industry must. The new type of consumer demands it (push) and it is what technology wants (pull).

This past Saturday was Earth Day 2019 at Huston-Tillotson University. It was amazing to be able to participate in the festival, but it was also great to see so many people and organizations that care about the Earth. The oil and gas leader, Shell have partnered with Anesco, a UK renewables firm, to engage in a new battery storage project at the Becton gas terminal in Norfolk launching Summer 2019. Anesco, based in Reading in the South of England, was the first UK company to install commercial-scale batteries charged by solar power back in 2016. They also own and operate the UK’s first subsidy-free solar farm in Bedfordshire.
