Will Lithium Follow The ‘Super-Cycle’ Of Mining?

R-Squared Energy

Those high oil prices caused a recession, which reduced demand, which reduced prices. Thus, new supplies may come online even as demand softens. Eventually demand recovers, but new supply stagnates. But will lithium follow that same trend? The continued demand for EVs continues to drive the battery-production market.

Battery-led storage deployments need to sextuple globally says IEA

Smart Energy International

Despite immense cost cuts and their deployment in the power sector last year more than doubling, batteries need to lead a sixfold increase in global energy storage deployments to enable the world to meet 2030 targets, says the International Energy Agency (IEA). But today, the energy sector accounts for over 90% of overall battery demand.

Li-ion battery pack prices rise for first time, to $151/kWh

Charged

Lithium-ion battery prices have been dropping for so long that industry players and pundits tend to factor ever-cheaper cells into their predictions, and many have made (dubious) comparisons to Moore’s Law, one of the core tenets of the computer industry.

Soaring raw material prices could reverse the decline in EV battery costs

Charged

We EVangelists have gotten used to smugly pointing to the steadily declining costs of batteries (and renewable energy), but thanks to the recent surge in raw material prices, that positive trend could slow, or even go into reverse, according to a recent Reuters report. Lithium prices have also risen, more than doubling since the end of 2021.
