Researchers from University of California, Riverside, have detailed a method to convert plastic waste into a highly porous form of charcoal or char that has a whopping surface area of about 400 square meters per gram of mass. The plastic-to-char process was developed at UC Riverside’s Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering.

Global treaties and new technologies that address the manufacture, use, and reuse of plastics are needed to tackle this problem. Researchers have tried several different reuse approaches for addressing the growing global plastic waste stream.

Now, research by the environmental charity Hubbub blames ugly sweaters as yet another contributor to the plastic pollution crisis. Three-quarters of the sweaters Hubbub tested revealed at least some plastic in the material, with 44 percent being entirely made of acrylic, a plastic fiber. See more here:Â .
