This rosy view of logging, however, is hotly contested.

Converting land to biofuel production can have a disastrous impact on both the climate and biodiversity. But when an energy company burns millions of tonnes of wood sourced from clearcutting trees in highly biodiverse forests in a power station, all their energy is classified as “modern bioenergy” and therefore by definition “zero carbon”.

Many local people are furious at the damage done to their forests by logging corporations ripping out whole trees with Star-Wars machinery that first churns up and then compacts the soil. In any case, why send wood pellets to Europe to substitute for coal, when North Americans burn more fossil fuels than Europeans do? Carbon Foregone.
