Gas companies are misleading the British public by marketing “hydrogen ready” boilers as a climate-friendly alternative despite widespread doubts the technology will help curb emissions, according to a new report. At recent trade fairs , some firms have also had “100 percent hydrogen boilers” on display.

WPR’s campaign also explicitly promotes hydrogen as a viable fuel for domestic heating. With targets now set for the phase-out of gas boilers in countries across Europe, in recent years, gas companies in the UK and the EU have lobbied hard for hydrogen over heat pumps – the model which offers the least disruption to their business model.

A gas company has been accused of “greenwashing” in a North Yorkshire community ahead of a crunch decision on the UK’s first ‘hydrogen village’. Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is bidding to host a two-year government-funded trial in Redcar, Teesside, to replace gas with ‘green’ hydrogen in around 2,000 homes.

Out in Utah, a coal-fired power plant supplying electricity to Los Angeles is being outfitted with natural-gas-fired turbines that will eventually be able to run on hydrogen, created via electrolysis with wind and solar power and stored in massive underground caverns for use when that clean energy isn’t available for the grid.

As one example, we are working on developing green hydrogen or green ammonia using geothermal-powered electrolyzers. Another idea: in the same way that solar PV is helping geothermal plants, onshore wind plants could be supported by geothermal power from deep sedimentary basins—for example, in the wind belt of west Texas.
