UK substantially underestimates its methane emissions from oil and gas production – and many other countries probably do too

Envirotec Magazine

A newer, more accurate method for calculating methane emissions from offshore oil and gas production suggests that the United Kingdom severely underestimates its greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers conclude that as much as five times more methane is being leaked from oil and gas production than reported.

Secrets of a long partnership in gas detection (Sponsored content)

Envirotec Magazine

Available in two models (pump or diffusion) and battery powered with onboard datalogging, the YESAIR instruments have been designed for intermittent or continuous indoor air quality monitoring of temperature, RH, particulates and up to 5 gases. These facilities can present a variety of potential hazards to human health.

Carbon offsets alone won’t make flying climate-friendly

Grist

It’s packed with energy; per unit of weight, at least 60 times as much as the lithium-ion batteries used to propel electric cars. In the presence of the sun’s rays, nitrogen molecules set of a chain of reactions that produce ozone and destroy free-floating atmospheric methane. It’s also terrible for the climate.

Other problematic sources of air pollution include methane, which produces hazardous ground-level ozone that is linked to health conditions such as lung damage, chest pain , and exacerbated respiratory diseases. Notably, both methane and many major forms of PM 2.5 exposure from 10 micrograms per square meter to just 5.

The quest for cleaner air

Envirotec Magazine

Diverse compounds are emitted by everything from motor vehicles to power plants, and include both greenhouse gases and short-lived climate pollutants – which are known to fuel global warming – as well as a host of volatile organic compounds that can lead to short- and long-term health problems in humans.
