Use recyclable materials when possible. Using recyclable materials is an obvious starting point, admittedly, but one that needs highlighting. As the world continually shifts towards protecting the environment, more opportunities are present for the use of recyclable materials.

Many of these materials also carry supply chain and compliance risks. Pressure is growing to use more recycled materials in EV batteries. Under new regulations proposed by the EU, EV batteries will be required to contain a minimum of 12% recycled cobalt and 4% recycled lithium and nickel by 2030.

The next largest destination, Germany, received just under 10%, whilst material sent to Asia, overall, increased from around 9% in 2022, to almost 20% in 2023. Indonesia took a further 3.4%, and Taiwan 2.5%.

According to Bloomberg , producing 100 GWh/year would make Redwood a major US producer of cathodes, the equal of the largest producers in Asia.
