Mercedes will establish a pilot plant for the recycling of lithium-ion battery systems, under a new wholly-owned subsidiary called LICULAR. The process recovers battery-grade cobalt, nickel and lithium, and is expected to be able to recover graphite in the future. Construction will take place in two stages.

Battery recycling and manufacturing company Ascend Elements (formerly known as Battery Resourcers ) is planning to open a battery recycling plant in Georgia by August of 2022, where it will recycle lithium, cobalt and nickel. It selected the Covington, Georgia site due to the proximity of EV manufacturing hubs and battery factories.
