UK biotech company Toraphene says it is preparing to unveil the world’s first truly biodegradable, compostable and commercially viable alternative to plastic packaging. Such plastics make up 23 percent of marine waste. The firm says it aims to render plastic packaging obsolete and disrupt the $4 trillion plastics industry.

A new adhesive derived from materials including food waste should enable 90 percent of engineered wood products, such as furniture and construction boards, to become fully recyclable and help to develop a circular economy in this sector, says the firm marketing it. The new adhesive is claimed to be sustainable and non-toxic.

PragmatIC says its technology could allow a low-cost inlay (tag) to be incorporated in packaging, allowing consumers to access information about product usage, food storage, cooking instructions and local recycling.
