Thousands of acres of forest, and the carbon-dense peat soils beneath, have gone up in flames, clearing the way for rows of oil palm trees. In 2011, the government of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced that it would stop handing out forest land for palm oil plantations. Palm oil is a dirty word for many environmentalists.
