In 2016, Cleantech San Diego was awarded a $5 million grant from the California Energy Commission to launch the Southern California Energy Innovation Network (SCEIN), one of the state’s four innovation clusters. Together, these startups employ 812 people, and have had 469 patents approved since being accepted into the program.

has a patented bacteria-based technology that converts organic waste into Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a biopolymer that can be used to replace a wide range of oil-based plastic applications. These innovative companies use it as a feedstock, capture the accumulated waste of the past 150 years, and convert it into useful products.
