Even if Earth does not have had Arctic sea ice in most of its history, it plays a crucial role in regulating our current climate. Some have actually called the Arctic the world’s “air-conditioning system” because of the role of the large ice sheets in cooling the surrounding continents. Sea level rising (not because of melting).

Lovelock’s main concern was not warming caused by the greenhouse effect, however, but the prospect of a precipitous drop in temperatures caused by the localised cooling influence of atmospheric pollution. But the authors theorised that localised cooling caused by air pollution might counteract the greenhouse effect.

Tice claimed the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) suggested sea level rises would not occur for hundreds of years, adding: “Why are we investing all this money in getting to net zero? If you were worried about sea level rises, you’d be better investing the money in defences.”
