Logging, invasive pests, disease, forest clearance and other types of habitat loss all threaten tree species. Central and South America lead in number of tree species, followed by tropical parts of Southeast Asia and Africa. Nor is climate change helping.

The Pantanal wetlands in central South America burned. This is, in fact, the basis for most agriculture, and it is how places like Mediterranean Europe, with its notoriously fire-prone environment, prevented wildfire from overrunning human settlement. Amazonia had its worst fire season in 20 years.
