Even if Earth does not have had Arctic sea ice in most of its history, it plays a crucial role in regulating our current climate. Some have actually called the Arctic the world’s “air-conditioning system” because of the role of the large ice sheets in cooling the surrounding continents. Good news for boats, bad news for polar bears.
