And that is exactly where it hurts most: once there is no more multi-year ice, the Arctic is per very definition ice-free during summer and the unit is broken. Unfortunately, all kinds of positive (or negative?) As long as there is ice in a body of water, any surrounding heat energy is carried towards the ice to make it melt.
