Microplastics accelerate cell death at 3 times the normal rate, study says

Researchers from the University Medical Centre (UMC) Utrecht recently announced that cells exposed to microplastics experience cell death three times faster than those that are not. With microplastic pollution everywhere, the findings are sobering. The term microplastics has steadily crept into contemporary literature.

Of the plastic waste we generate, at least eight million tons up in our ocean every year, and it is estimated that the seas now contain about 51 trillion microplastic particles - 500 times more than stars in our galaxy. This is too little, too late. Coral is 20 times more likely to become diseased upon coming into contact with plastics.
