In September 2020 the extent of the oldest ice (4+ years old) was 230,000 square kilometers, slightly more than 5% of total sea ice. This is considerably higher compared to 2019, when the 4+ year old ice extent stood at 55,000 square kilometers. Overall since the 1980s however, sea ice has become much thinner and younger.
