In cities, trees provide much-needed shade on hot summer days, remove pollution from the air, and help manage stormwater, reducing runoff and improving its quality. In 2009, one study calculated that the program had only offset about 10 percent of the coal plant’s emissions. So is it time to stop focusing on ‘planting’ trees?
