That organic material contains copious amounts of carbon. When Jones Tract, a delta island, flooded in 2004, the damage cost $90 million to fix. The reasoning is that once wet, the land will stop losing carbon and the sinking will come to a halt. Nor is the flooding of delta islands unprecedented.
