The OECS recently held the "Demystifying Geothermal Energy Workshop" in Grenada, aiming to improve geothermal communications in the Caribbean member states.

As part of the GEOBUILD programme, delegates from the member states of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) participated in the “Demystifying Geothermal Energy” workshop held in Grenada. The three-day workshop aimed to develop the capacity of communications and identify focal points in communicating messages related to geothermal energy among the beneficiary member states of GEOBUILD programme.

The Geothermal Energy: Capacity Building for Utilisation, Investment and Local Development (GEOBUILD) programme under the OECS is a three-year initiative supported by  the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the European Union Caribbean Investment Fund (EU-CIF).

Earlier this year, the GEOBUILD programmed had also organized a study tour for representatives of the member states to the ongoing geothermal development in Roseau Valley in Dominica.

Towards improving geothermal communications

The workshop’s primary objective is to provide training in communicating about geothermal energy, recognizing that it is a specialized and technical subject and that there are several misconceptions on its usefulness and effects on the environment.

One of the main points discussed during the workshop is the need to emphasize how geothermal can be used for direct applications that can create economic and social opportunities for member states. This is important as the conversation about geothermal typically focuses only on electricity generation, which is important but is also not the only facet of geothermal energy use.

Participants took part in group sessions to identify the appropriate techniques in delivering positive messages about geothermal to different target audiences, thus creating improved geothermal communications materials for the OECS.
