As part of the regular Focus on Geothermal Webinar series – a partnership of Enerchange and ThinkGeoEnergy – we are proud to host Ken Wisian and Malcolm Ross from the University of Texas at Austin for a webinar on “Texas Heat, Global Impact: HotRock Geothermal Research Consortium.”

In this webinar, Ken and Malcolm will discuss the work being done by the HotRock team with current cutting-edge research, as well as a recently completed geothermal feasibility study for Presidio County, in southwest Texas.

Speaker: Ken Wisian and Malcolm Ross, HotRock Geothermal Research Consortium, University of Texas at Austin

The HotRock Geothermal Research Consortium at The Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) at University of Texas, Austin, was formed in 2023. HotRock integrates new state of the art science and engineering with over 100 years of oil and gas experience to accelerate the deployment of geothermal generation at scale to support net zero energy emissions. In addition to deep experience in conventional hydrothermal systems, HotRock is in the forefront of the dry rock geothermal anywhere revolution.

Ken Wisian, Ph.D., Major General USAF (retired), is responsible for coordinating environmental related research at the BEG. He came to the BEG from the Center for Space Research. Previously, Dr. Wisian was a senior state executive responsible for disaster recovery, oil spill prevention and response, and coastal infrastructure and environmental protection for Texas. Dr. Wisian is a geophysicist whose main research is in geothermal systems, modeling, and instrumentation & data analysis . Other current research includes; autonomy/drones, applied gravity, planetary geology/space exploration, infrastructure resiliency and international relations.

Malcolm Ross, Ph.D., is an innovation-focused geoscientist. As a consultant, he recently worked for the New Energies Research & Technology Team at Shell, focusing on pre-strategic opportunities in the New Energies space, especially geothermal energy. He continues to teach a GIS class at Rice University as well as a class on geothermal at the University of Texas, Austin. He is currently focused on building networks of people and companies focused on accelerating commercial geothermal opportunities and R&D to meet the rising tide of expectation for a sustainable low-carbon world.
