A recent field visit has identified a potential geothermal resource in the Salve Faccha reservoir in Napo, Ecuador. Further studies have been recommended.

A recent study jointly conducted by the Geological and Energy Research Institute (IIGE) and the Yachay Tech University has validated the existence of a possible geothermal resource in the area  of the Salve Faccha reservoir in the Province in Napo, Ecuador.

A Framework Cooperation Agreement signed in March 2023 between the two parties created a strategic alliance that aimed to facilitate scientific exchange and technology and knowledge transfer complementing the competencies of both parties. Based on the agreement, a collection and validation of geoscientific information was carried out in relation the thesis in development by student Karol Ambuludi on the “Exploration and Assessment of Geothermal Resources around Salve Faccha Reservoir: Potential and Utilization.”

Physical-chemical characterization was then conducted at the study site. The activities included sample collection for mineralogical analysis and a structural and geological reconnaissance of the Salve Faccha reservoir. The studies verified the presence of thermal manifestations – five thermal springs with temperatures greater than 30 °C.

Based on the results, it was recommended to continue monitoring the thermal springs in the study site and to carry out a second sampling campaign for thermal waters and gases in the Salve Faccha geothermal field.

The Inter-American Development Bank had recently announced a call for Expressions of Interest for consultancy services to formulate a geothermal development plan for Ecuador.
