The IHFC has published the 2024 version of the Global Heat Flow Database featuring, for the first time, quality score evaluations for the heat flow data.

The International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC) has published the 2024 update of the Global Heat Flow Database. This is a collaborative effort between academia and industry that compiles authenticated heat flow data to provide a better understanding of the Earth’s thermal field.

The data can be downloaded via this link: https://doi.org/10.5880/fidgeo.2024.014

The 2024 compilation, for the first time, contains quality score evaluations according to the IHFC quality codes. Since 1963, the International Heat Flow Commission has been fostering the compilation of the Global Heat Flow Database to provide reliable heat-flow data. Over time, techniques and methodologies evolved, calling for a reorganization of the database structure and for a reassessment of stored heat-flow data.

A documentation of this process can be accessed here:  doi: 10.1016/j.tecto.2023.229976

The recent version of the global heat flow database contains about 91,182 data points from 1,586 publications (54,553 from the continental domain and 36,629 from the oceanic domain. The admission of recent data is in progress – the next update is expected for summer 2025, as the second intermediate result of the data assessment project.
