Applications are being accepted for a geothermal internship in Mexico for young professionals to learn about different aspects of the geothermal industry.

Applications are currently being accepted for an internship program in Mexico for highly motivated young people who wish to develop professionally in the field of geothermal energy. The program is being organized by the International Geothermal Association (IGA), the Institute of Geophysics under the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and ENERYOU.

Details on the call for applications can be found via this link. Applications will be accepted only until 30 April 2024.

The program, with the title “Young Promoters of Geothermal Energy: linking academia, industry and communities”  will be the first geothermal internship program that will be carried out in Mexico. It aims to address the various gaps in advancing the use and understanding of geothermal resources in the Latin America region. It will foster regional collaboration through the training of the young professionals and the host entities that include academics, geothermal companies, power plant operators, cooperatives, direct-use operators, and communities that interact with geothermal areas.

The chosen candidates will receive specialized and personalized training from experts who work professionally in various fields of geothermal energy, learning topics such as exploration, modeling, exploitation, and evaluation of social and environmental impacts in geothermal areas. There will be plenty of opportunities to collaborate with a network of experts in the Mexican geothermal sector.

The internship will have five modules:

  • Attendance at the XXX Congress of the Mexican Geothermal Association (with brief oral participation)
  • Exploration of geothermal areas including collection of field data, post-processing, and laboratory visits
  • Operation of a geothermal plant with visits to two geothermal plants in the country
  • Direct uses of geothermal energy
  • Dissemination and communication activities

Candidates for the internship must satisfy at least one of three qualifications:

  • Be enrolled in a master’s degree or training program in a specialty related to geothermal;
  • Be enrolled in their first years of doctoral studies in a subject related to geothermal
  • Work in a company or civil association focused on geothermal energy.

The beneficiary of the internship will receive financial coverage for the costs of the transfer from their country of origin to Mexico, as well as local transfers, lodging, and maintenance.
