Kurita Group will be at the WGC 2023 in Beijing, China to present unique and value-adding solutions for issues encountered in geothermal utilities.

Beijing, China, will be hosting one of the most significant events in the geothermal community, the World Geothermal Congress 2023 (WGC 2023), between 15-17 September. The Kurita Group is represented as a global organization in the event that involves the participation of Kurita Water Industries (Japan), Kurita Europe, Kurita China, and Kurita Indonesia. Kurita Europe will deliver two speeches discussing the technologies developed to support the motto of “clean geothermal and green earth” in harmony with the WGC organization.

The World Geothermal Congress (WGC) is the premier global geothermal event for this unique industry that gives many opportunities to share knowledge and innovations from around the world, bringing together leaders of industry, academia, governments, and communities to collaborate and provide thoughtful solutions for sustainable development. Kurita’s contributions are scheduled in “Corrosion and Scaling” sessions on different topics related to solutions for natural challenges of geothermal systems.

The BOSS concept presents a promising and eco-friendly solution to address challenging deposits

Dynamic physical conditions such as P and T tend to disturb mineral saturation both in the downhole and surface regarding the design parameters. Amorphous silica, metal silicates, and metal sulfides are the most common deposit contents widely observed at surface facilities of the process. Scaling formed at pipelines, valves, pumps, and pressurized tanks causes energy loss, resulting in extra downtime and maintenance costs. Their mitigation and prevention can be managed in several ways, and the proper application should be chosen based on the facility and the deposit.

The first contribution will focus on demonstrating Kurita’s innovative solution, which is mainly efficient for compelling scale formation at surface installations. The approach is based upon combining well-proven conventional treatment programs with a performance booster effect. The results from the field application of this concept in different technologies of geothermal power generation will be introduced in several cases.

Kurita specializes in sulfide stabilization and particular precipitates seen in geothermal

Despite the common scale types of carbonates and silicates, deposition of sulfides is considerably encountered in geothermal systems. This type of deposition is especially observed in binary cycle geothermal power plants. Among various sulfide scales including arsenic and iron, this contribution will focus on antimony and lead-rich sulfide scales in geothermal utilization in various geographies.

Despite the widely conducted research on carbonate and silicate scaling, studies concerning sulfide mitigation strategies are limited. This contribution will present the effect of successful stabilizers for antimony sulfide and lead sulfide, mainly dedicated to geothermal applications. Laboratory studies will be shown for both deposit types. A case study on antimony sulfide stabilization will be presented with observed physical parameters during the field treatment program.
