State-owned electricity company Taiwan Power Co. Taipower) has inaugurated the 840-kW Renze geothermal power plant in Yilan County, Taiwan. The power plant is set to begin commercial operations by the end of this year. Jointly developed and constructed by Taipower and state-owned CPC Corp.

Between 2021 and 2022, the global weighted average levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of ten newly commissioned geothermal projects fell by 22% to USD 0.056 kWh. This statistic was reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in their newly published document, “Renewable Power Generation Costs in 2022.”

The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) recently celebrated the 40th year anniversary of the Tongonan geothermal power plant in the Leyte geothermal field of the Philippines. After several years of intensive exploration and development work, the Tongonan-1 geothermal power plant was inaugurated on July 02, 1983.

Veitur , a subsidiary of Reykjavik Energy (Orkuveita Reykjavíkur / OR), will soon drill nine (9) research boreholes in Álftanes, Iceland to evaluate the site’s potential for geothermal heating. Research boreholes will be drilled to depths of 60 to 100 meters. Drilling will take between one to three days for each borehole.
