The Potential Harms and Global Warming Impacts of Hydrogen
Clean Energy Group Releases New Fact Sheets

November 6, 2023

Clean Energy Group has produced two new fact sheets outlining the potential harms and global warming impacts of hydrogen:

"Many states are relying on hydrogen to meet their decarbonization goals, but in most cases, there are more affordable, feasible and cleaner alternatives," explains fact sheet author Abbe Ramanan, a project director at Clean Energy Group. "If not done right, then hydrogen expansion will only make climate change worse."

Clean Energy Group published these fact sheets in the wake of the U.S. Department of Energy's announcement that over half of the $7 billion Hydrogen Hubs funding will go towards Hubs producing hydrogen from fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage (CCS), also known as blue hydrogen. This massive investment ignores major concerns cited by climate scientists, environmental justice advocates, and clean energy experts.

"Blue hydrogen and hydrogen blending perpetuate fossil fuel dependence," states Clean Energy Group President Seth Mullendore. "It is very concerning that so much federal funding is going toward some of the most harmful use cases."

With these new fact sheets, Clean Energy Group hopes to build awareness about the most concerning applications of hydrogen. These fact sheets can be a resource for policymakers, environmental justice advocates, and frontline communities facing hydrogen expansion in their region.
