Bad Lauchstädt Refinery | Wind and Hydrogen

Milestone

(Uniper and VNG AG) signed the contract for supplying Green Hydrogen to TotalEnergies' refinery near to the 30MW electrolyser project in Bad Lauchstädt, with first hydrogen deliveries in 2025.

The project combines 50MW wind power with our electrolysis, a retrofitted gas pipeline and in future also H2-ready storage.

The Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park is a large-scale real-world laboratory for the intelligent production of green hydrogen as well as its storage, transport, marketing and use. As a real laboratory for the energy transition, the entire value chain of green hydrogen is being tested on an industrial scale for the first time.

A large electrolysis plant of up to 30 MW produces green hydrogen using renewable electricity from a nearby wind farm. Stored temporarily in a salt cavern specially designed for this purpose, the green hydrogen can be fed into the hydrogen network of the chemical industry based in Central Germany via a converted gas pipeline and, in the future, be used for urban mobility solutions.

The real laboratory thus contributes to researching these future technologies relating to green hydrogen and bringing them to market maturity - for a technologically strong and future-oriented hydrogen region in Central Germany and successful sector coupling throughout the Federal Republic

This success is the result of excellent cooperation with our partners who jointly managed the complexity of such deals and found compromises in order to secure sustainable and cost-effective energy supplies, propelling us toward a decarbonized hydrogen economy.
