If you have recently noticed some unwanted wildlife or pests inside or around your home, pinpointing how to get rid of them and what to use to do so can feel overwhelming if you have never handled a task like this before on your own.

And if you have been implementing habits around your home to be more eco-friendly or climate-minded, you may be wondering if there are even any natural ways to truly and permanently get rid of pests. Harsh chemicals are often the go-to, but many people may not want to use them because of the production and harsh effects they can have on those in the household if they are not used correctly.

DIY Tips

The great thing is, there are several ways you can naturally rid your home of pests. You can avoid chemicals or unnatural products if you prefer to do so. For example, if you’ve noticed ants around your home, there are some great natural DIY tips for getting rid of ants. Vinegar is an all-star pest remover. Make a 50/50 water/vinegar solution and spray around the areas you have seen ants. If you’d like, you can add vinegar to your all-purpose or kitchen cleaner, and that can help do the trick as well in areas you use that cleaner. Let’s take a look at a few more ways you can naturally rid your home of pests:

Spices

Many pests, big or small, do not like the smell of certain spices. Cinnamon, cayenne, and paprika are three spices you can use to “season” your window sills. Consider other areas you have seen pests inside your home. You can place a baggie or boxes of these spices in cupboards or drawers where you regularly see pests as well. Even large wildlife does not enjoy the taste or smell of certain spices. You can mix a solution of hot sauce, cayenne, red pepper, or another spicy ingredient with water. Then spray it around your yard to help ward off wildlife from entering your home. Spray around your trash bins for good measure too.

Essential Oils

You can mix certain essential oils with water and spray them where you notice ants and other pests. Peppermint, in particular, is effective with small pests and spiders. Put a few drops of peppermint oil in a spray bottle with water and spread them on window sills and other entry points in the home. Peppermint smells great, so your home will smell fresh as you do this.

Diatomaceous Earth

This powder is natural and made from the shells of algae. It can be sprinkled or spread in areas of your home where you have noticed certain pests. You can add it to the soil in your yard to ward off intruders there as well. It is not a poison and is all-natural and eco-friendly. It works well with roaches, ants, fleas, snails, maggots, and caterpillars.
