Provincial and federal representatives participated in a virtual event to launch Green Economy New Brunswick, a hub to engage businesses of all sectors and sizes – in both rural and urban settings – to develop greenhouse gas inventories, set emission-reduction targets, and create plans to lower their emissions.
“This funding will provide important support to the business community and raise awareness about how they can take climate action,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gary Crossman, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “Initiatives like these are vital to strengthen our resiliency and encourage long-term economic development.”
The provincial government invested $267,553 toward the project through the Regional Development Corporation while the federal government provided $267,553 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
“To achieve our ambitious climate goals, Atlantic Canadian businesses must incorporate clean technology, products, processes and services that improve performance and protect the environment,” said Official Languages Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, who is also minister responsible for ACOA. “Through this project, more SMEs will improve their competitiveness and resiliency while leading the way on climate action for years to come.”
Green Economy New Brunswick is the eighth and latest hub in a growing network across the country which collectively have engaged more than 500 businesses, in various sectors and sizes, in setting and achieving sustainability targets. Together these businesses have reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by more than 200,000 tonnes, the equivalent of taking 43,000 cars off the road annually.
“Green Economy New Brunswick is based on a successful model of engaging businesses in climate action,” said Charles Thibodeau, program manager for Green Economy New Brunswick. “We join a national network led by Green Economy Canada, which includes eight other green economy hubs across the country. We know New Brunswick businesses can lead the way to a thriving low-carbon future, and we are excited for what is to come.”
