Transgrid rolls out new next-generation fast-charger for electric vehicles

December 5, 2022

Transgrid has installed the first next-generation fast-charger as part of a wider program to transition the network's fleet to electric vehicles.

Developed by Spanish charging firm Wallbox, the 60 kW supernova next-generation DC fast-charger is the first installed in the Australian market.

Transgrid Fleet Manager Ryan Thomas said the new technology will support the uptake of EVs.

"The fast-charger we have installed at our Wallgrove site can be expanded and upgraded and allows us to charge two vehicles at once.

"In the future it will also give us the option to upgrade to ultra-rapid charging which allows some EVS to be charged from 20 percent to 80 percent battery capacity in just 15 minutes," he said.

Reece Davis, Country Manager ANZ at Wallbox said: "We are excited that Supernova has found its first home in Australia at Transgrid. Our first DC fast charger has been developed with reliability and scalability at the forefront to ensure a seamless experience for both charge point operators and drivers. Supernova is also future-proofed to ensure that it keeps pace with Transgrid's EV fleet."

Transgrid will trial the Wallbox DC fast charger at its Wallgrove site at Eastern Creek in Sydney.

"This trial will focus on our Sydney fleet but will also help us to identify other sites on our network which would benefit from installing similar charging units as we see more EVs rolled out.

"We've already transitioned more than half of our passenger fleet to electric or hybrid vehicles and we will soon receive our first electric ute for our field crews, which is an exciting next step to transition to a greener fleet," Mr Thomas said.

Transgrid currently has a fleet of 400 utility vehicles and has secured one of the first electric utes to be released in Australia, the 2023 LDV eT60 which will be trialled on the transmission network in 2023.
