Volkswagen has begun pre-production in its plant in Anting, Shanghai, which will be singularly focused on manufacturing the automaker’s all-electric Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) models for the Chinese market. The first vehicle produced will be the China-specific Volkswagen ID. model. Full-scale production at the Anting plant is scheduled for October 2020, at which point VW says the factory will have a 300,000-vehicle capacity.
In the future, the Anting plant will be capable of running six different car projects simultaneously. It is scheduled to manufacture 15 MEB models for various Volkswagen brands.
Chairman of the Board Herbert Dies said, “The Volkswagen Group projects a total volume of 22 million all-electric cars worldwide by 2028, with more than 50 percent of that from China. The country plays a crucial part in our electrification strategy, which will pave the way to Volkswagen’s goal of becoming net carbon-neutral by 2050. Together with the start of MEB production, we will launch the Volkswagen ID. family in China as well, a brand-new generation of fully electric and connected vehicles.”
