GB Generation and Carbon - Exploring the Data
In this article I explore Great Britain's generation mix and carbon emissions profile from March 2015 to February 2022 and attempt to answer the question: "Have we made progress in decarbonising Great Britains electricity generation?".
GB Generation and Carbon - Exploring the Data
I finally had a smart meter set installed towards the end of last year. Having had a decade long involvement with the programme, this was a little exciting as you can imagine. The installation was carried out by a lovely young man from the south coast who was more than happy to talk to me about the process, each of the devices and what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. As he was packing up, he handed me the In Home Display (IHD) and gave a quick tutorial on how to use it. The IHD is a nice touch I must say. Mine sits on the windowsill where I can check it easily but doesn't sit in my eyeline. It has been interesting to learn about how much energy I'm using. Energy bills have increased substantially and we all need to be mindful of our carbon footprint. The lights in the hall are now off without fail and the dishwasher never goes on with a half load! A new interest in my own energy usage led me to think about how much the country uses and how much carbon do we actually produce from electricity generation. The biggest question I had though, was "are we making progress on decarbonising electricity?". BMReports helpfully provide detailed data on a whole range of different areas in electricity generation and transmission. Using that data, I have built up a monthly picture of how much electricity has been generated in Great Britain and from what source since March 2015. It's worth noting that BM Reports only provide data for Great Britain, Northern Ireland data is made available by a different organisation.
