The energy crisis currently engulfing Europe has bought into sharp focus that energy is not only an environmental issue, but also a national security issue.

This is almost certainly making other nations take a careful look at their own situation. Who are they reliant on for their energy needs? This article published in Europe energypost last week draws attention to the heat energy wastage in European cities (as it is in cities all over the world) through wastewater networks and how easily and quickly this situation can be improved to make cities more energy efficient.

Is this also relevant to US cities?

I would think this is the type of solution that can't be turned into a quick fix, but amid the oil crisis it could be boosted as an option more people consider to reduce reliance on foreign volatile supplies if nothing else

Thanks for the comment Matt.
I think it's something that can be implemented in a relatively short time frame (1-2 years for this rather than 5-10 years that many horizontal infrastructure projects require) and there is enough heat capacity available to make a real meaningful difference. It also moves a city towards a 'circular economy' energy strategy which is better in the long term than quick fixes driven by panic responses to a crisis. I would love to hear some thoughts from energy policy makers on adding this energy resource into their planning mix!
