If your home has a backyard, a patio is the best way to maximize it. This is where you can hang out with your family but also get some work done. Working from home means having a proper home office, so why don’t you turn your patio into one? And if you do this properly, you can create an office that’s eco-friendly and totally sustainable!

Declutter

No matter how big your patio is and how much free space you’ve got, the chances are you’re eventually going to need more. That’s why you need to make sure your patio is decluttered and doesn’t look like a junkyard. However, this is where most of us keep the things we don’t want around the house anymore, which is the least sustainable scenario you can think of!

Even though most people hate decluttering their patio, doing this is surprisingly easy. All you need to do is identify the things you don’t need anymore and remove them. You don’t have to throw them away, of course, especially if you’re trying to be responsible and sustainable. Repurposing, refurbishing, donating, and even selling these things is always an option. A declutter patio is one of the ways to boost your home’s visual appeal and increase its value, so do this as soon as possible.

Check the flooring

Once you’ve taken care of your clutter, it’s time to start turning your patio into a proper office. First, check the flooring and make sure it’s all right. If your home hasn’t been renovated in a while or you haven’t been paying attention to the patio, you’ll probably need to fix the flooring. After all, if you plan on spending your time here every single day, you might want to do it just in case.

If you determine that your patio needs new flooring, you have to deal with this issue straight away. Luckily, there are lots of patio flooring options to choose from, and you’ll surely be able to find something that suits you. From wood decking and cobblestones to brick flooring and concrete – all of these options are durable and visually appealing, so choose one that looks the most sustainable. If possible, opt for reclaimed materials and recycled options because that’s the win-win combination all sustainability enthusiasts love the most.

Find the equipment

Depending on what you do, you’re going to need some equipment that will help you do your job effectively and successfully. Most of us use nothing more than a computer, a printer, a phone, and a reliable fiber internet connection that will keep us online all day long, but that’s not all there is. In addition to these, some people use scanners, fax machines, photocopiers and other things that make their job easier.

However, you mustn’t forget about stationary either. All those pens, pencils, staples, and binder clips don’t seem too important at first, but they’re crucial. These things make your life easier, and having lots of them around is quite useful, so consider buying these in bulk. This is another way to be sustainable since you won’t have to drive to the store and back over and over again – you’ll need just one trip and you’ll be done purchasing your office equipment!

Get the furniture

Now that your patio is all done and ready for you, you can start furnishing it. No matter what you do and how old you are, if you work from home, you need proper office furniture. This means that a supportive chair and a spacious desk where you can take care of your work are a must. However, not just any chair and any desk will do, and you need to dedicate some time to finding the right option for your patio home office.

Again, the easiest way to keep this part of the process sustainable is to look for reclaimed or reupholstered furniture. Instead of buying brand new models, you can opt for salvaged goods. Many times they are in good shape and even look nicer than new chairs and desks. Still, if you decide to spice up your old stuff, make sure you use eco-friendly materials. That way you make sure you’re as sustainable as you can be.

Turning your patio into a sustainable home office isn’t as hard as it sounds. This is a project that requires very little time and effort and can introduce a massive change in your life. Working on your patio will bring you closer to nature, and that means you’ll be highly motivated and productive. In the end, you’ll be able to get more done in less time. That means you have a chance to hang out with your family more than before. Finally, if you go for recycled and reclaimed solutions, you’ll also make the most of your sustainability potential. That’s the best way to show the world how green and eco-friendly you are!
