KLIK FOUNDATION
Thailand and Switzerland sign climate protection agreement

June 27, 2022
On 24 June 2022, Thailand and Switzerland signed a cooperation agreement on joint climate protection activities to be implemented under the Paris Climate Agreement. This type of bilateral agreement, such as Switzerland has already concluded with Dominica, Georgia, Ghana, Peru, Senegal and Vanuatu, forms the legal basis and prerequisite for the activities of the KliK Foundation to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions abroad.

Government agencies and private organisations can register with suggestions for climate protection programmes via a Thailand platform specially set up by the KliK Foundation at thailand.klik.ch.

International climate protection activities with legally based standards
Under the Paris Agreement, Switzerland has committed itself to halving its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This goal is to be achieved primarily through domestic measures. Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement offers the option to achieve additional emission reductions through climate protection programmes abroad and to count these towards the Swiss reduction target.

The cooperation agreement also ensures that the certified emission reductions (ITMOs) meet the highest requirements in terms of quality, environmental integrity and human rights. In order to avoid double counting, Thailand undertakes to increase its emissions balance by the amount of ITMOs transferred to Switzerland.

Promotion of investments in the field of electromobility
The electric mobility programme "Bangkok E-Bus Programme" is to be launched as a first measure in the context of the bilateral cooperation. During the Thai delegation's visit to Switzerland, the purchase agreement between the programme owner Energy Absolute and the KliK Foundation on the greenhouse gas emission reductions from this programme was signed, which secured its financing. The programme will help private bus companies in Thailand to convert their fleets from diesel to electric vehicles. In parallel, it will lay the foundation for a city-wide network of charging infrastructure. The climate protection measure will contribute significantly to improving the air in the capital and, as a flagship programme, is expected to pioneer the electrification of Thailand's mobility sector.
