MARKHAM
City achieves Milestone 5 in its fight against climate change through the Partners for Climate Protection program

February 27, 2023

The Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program has recognized the City of Markham with Milestone 5 for its corporate assets - the final milestone of the PCP framework demonstrating clear leadership on energy and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions management.

As a member of the PCP program, Markham is among more than 500 municipalities participating - representing 70% of the Canadian population. Currently, only 13% (71) of the participating municipalities have achieved Milestone 5.

"This recognition reaffirms the City of Markham's commitment and dedication to environmental sustainability," says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "Taking action on climate change results in environmental, social and economic benefits for the entire community."

The City's goal is to achieve Net-Zero GHG Emissions by 2050 and through our dedication to our environmental initiatives - each step moves us closer to achieving our climate goals.

Milestone 5 was achieved by completing the PCP program's requirement related to Monitoring and Reporting the impact from implementing Markham's Corporate Energy Management Plan.

Gabriela Ansari-Correa, Community Engagement Coordinator, Sustainability & Asset Management, accepts the award on behalf of the City of Markham at the Sustainable Communities Conference in Ottawa.

Since 2013, the City has implemented more than 200 initiatives that are saving energy, GHGs and utility costs - including the installation of energy-efficient heating and cooling systems in our facilities, improved and standardized building automation systems (BAS), implementing Green Building Standards, engagement and educational programs (e.g. Battle of the Buildings) and fleet vehicle migration to lower-carbon alternatives.

Markham is proud to share that its leading corporate energy management program has resulted in over $2 million per year in utility cost savings, 14% GHG emissions reductions per capita, 2.1 megawatts of installed solar PV, 18 industry-recognized awards, and garnered over $1.8 million in grants and incentives.

PCP is a network of Canadian municipal governments that have committed to reducing GHG emissions and protecting the climate.

The City of Markham was formally recognized by the PCP earlier this month at the Sustainable Communities Conference in Ottawa.
