The molten-salt reactor is being commercialized by Alpha Tech Research Corp. They call it the ARC Generator. It uses uranium and fluoride salt. It doesn't need high-pressure containment, operates at 700 Celsius degrees and if it should lose power, any radioactivity is safely contained by the molten salt which crystallizes and freezes. Fitting on a semitrailer flatbed, the reactor can be transported almost anywhere and can operate both off or on the grid.

It's interesting to think that one day the idea of nuclear power may just be completely decoupled from the large-scale, static power plants we know and instead be more on the side of a distributed asset like renewable energy. Evolution really is underway in the utility sector!

I agree with you, Matt. The challenge for nuclear fission as a solution is to overcome the resistance from environmentalists who continue to see radioactive waste as the big issue when greenhouse gas emissions from fossil use to create energy represents a far greater hazard. With molten salt the radioactive waste goes away. So that leaves Three Mile Island, Chornobyl, and Fukushima as the inhibitors blocking the adoption of 2nd and 3rd generation nuclear power technology.
