National Grid Partnered with the Town of Brookhaven to Celebrate Earth Day

April 25, 2023

National Grid celebrated Earth Day at the Holtsville Wildlife and Ecology Center in the Town of Brookhaven. Over 80 National Grid employees cleaned and beautified the Center's entranceway, Veterans Memorial, zoo entrance, waterfall and multiple sections of the zoo area. Volunteers also built enrichment activities for the wolves, lynxes and a hawk, adding shrubs and trees to their habitats.

The Holtsville Ecology Center is a shining example of Earth Day, once a landfill, it has been transformed into a thriving recreational and educational facility. The impressive wildlife at the preserve, ecology exhibits and tours, walking trails and a pool complex. The center is free to visit and gives back to the community by providing free compost and wood chips.

Under its Project C Commitment to Communities program, National Grid has renewed its support to clean energy and sustainability. Through Project C, National Grid is supporting the people and communities they serve across New York with sustainability programs, neighborhood development projects, grants and more.

"We are grateful to be partnering with National Grid for an Earth Day celebration at the Holtsville Ecology Site," said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro. "Nearly 80 National Grid employees are donating their time, energy and resources to clean up, plant and beautify the Animal Preserve and surrounding grounds. The Ecology Site is situated on a repurposed landfill and this type of project is the epitome of what Earth Day is all about."

"As we recognize Earth Day at the Town's Holtsville Ecology Center, I ask everyone to do their part every day to keep Brookhaven clean and green," said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. "We are happy to partner with National Grid on this Earth Day event and thank them for their efforts. I am proud to support their Commitment to Communities program for clean energy and sustainability, because it's something we can all do to advocate for a better environment and it's the right thing to do for the future of our planet."

"We are thrilled to spend Earth Day at the Holtsville Ecology Site, where thousands of families and kids get to experience all that Long Island and the Town of Brookhaven have to offer. This Center is a hub for families and community development," said Ross Turrini, Chief Operating Officer, National Grid. "National Grid is dedicated to our customers and communities every day, but our Earth Day volunteer events present a special opportunity to tell the powerful story of how National Grid is committed to Long Island, our environment, and our customers."

"We are very proud to partner with National Grid. The social responsibility and the work the employees have done today will be enjoyed by Brookhaven town residents for years to come," said Dan Panico, Brookhaven Deputy Supervisor.

"I grew up across the street from the Ecology Center and used to play here when I was young, this is a special place," said Suffolk County Legislator Anthony Piccirillo. "It is great to see all that can be accomplished when like-minded people come together to do good work."

"IBEW 1049 is proud to partner with National Grid in supporting Earth Day and celebrating the beauty and the bounty of our planet," said Pat Guidice, Business Manager for IBEW 1049. "As a union representing gas and utility workers, we recognize our role in building a sustainable tomorrow and work tirelessly to provide essential services to communities. We all play a critical role in protecting the planet we call home."

"The commitment that National Grid has for corporate philanthropy is so important, we don't see enough corporations investing in our communities," said Eric Alexander, Vision Long Island. "Beyond Earth Day, National Grid's Project C program helps our downtowns and our local businesses."

National Grid encourages Long Islanders to dig safely. As outdoor projects are starting, National Grid urges the public to Call Before You Dig, NY811 (by dialing 811) in order to prevent serious personal injury, property damage and service interruptions caused by accidentally digging into electric, gas, telephone, water, sewer or cable facilities. It's not only the safe thing to do, it's the law.
