Using Natural Gas to go Carbon Negative | realclearenergy.org
I have been thinking through decarbonization recently and ways we can leverage existing infrastructure to accomplish this. Economically thinking, most decarbonization strategies require huge energy- and carbon-intensive buildouts (e.g. new wind and solar farms, new transmission infrastructure, specialized pipelines, etc). To short circuit that, if we can use existing infrastructure, we can decarbonize faster and more efficiently. Here, I think through generating hydrogen from methane at the point of use rather than centralized production. Where rules and regulations require decarbonization and where utilities and heat users opt to decarbonize themselves, this pathway is worth exploring.

What gets dirtier the more that it cleans? The answer to this childhood riddle – a bar of soap – is of little national consequence. But another apparent paradox may just change the world: leaning on methane to reverse emissions. Far from a gimmick, this strategy is economically sound.
