Materials and surfaces developer Meta Materials has signed an agreement to acquire all the assets and intellectual property of Optodot, a nano-composite battery separator and coating technology company.

The acquisition, valued at $48.5 million, includes 67 patents and 22 pending patents. One of Optodot’s patents is for its third-generation NPORE ECS (electrode-coated separator) technology.

“Optodot has developed disruptive, high-performance ceramic nanomaterials in partnership with leading battery and medical equipment OEMs,” said President and CEO of Meta Materials George Palikaras. “Through this strategic acquisition, META expands its nanomaterials library and core expertise to address key challenges in battery safety and other applications, opening multi-billion-dollar markets.”

“Optodot products can be combined and coated with META’s PLASMAfusion technology,” says Meta Materials.

Meta Materials will continue licensing and scaling up manufacturing of Optodot’s technology. The company also plans to boost the capacity of its production facility in Quebec.
