In addition it will allow for a new “boom” in EVs. Because as prices ease, infrastructure will come online. Then battery range increases. In addition, major oil companies such as Total SE have estimated that 20 million popular EVs. Because it will be on the road by 2030. Although there are already big benefits to buying into popular EVs. That’s especially if you have solar power installed in your home and can facilitate EV charging. For then you can harness free power from the sun to power your EV.

Electric Vehicles in Australia

EVs are becoming a popular choice in Australia, as they have just claimed 10% market share. I mean 10.6% of all vehicles sold in September 2023. For they were an EV of some type. The overall penetration rate of EVs in Australia is down from its peak of 8% this year to 6.5%.

If you are looking to buy an EV in Australia, here are some of the most popular models that you should consider.

SUVs

SUVs are now the fastest growing segment in consumer automotive. The same can be said for EVs. To date, there have been 44,933 electric SUVs sold in Australia, compared with 20,670 electric passenger vehicles according to CarExpert.

Tesla electric vehicles model 3, y

As of October 2023’s VFACTS, the Tesla Model 3 was the most popular electric vehicle in Australia with 1,178 sales, with the Chinese marque BYD Atto 3 selling 912 units with the Tesla Model Y SUV selling 810 units.

The MG 4 hatch came in fourth place in October with 751 sales. These “big four” lead the pack, with number five being the Kia EV6s (220) and number six being the MG ZS EVs (190).

Mercedes Benz electric vehicles

The luxury marque Mercedes-Benz EQA came in at 7th place with 149 sales, the Volvo XC40 Recharge PE in 8th with 149 sales, and the new Volkswagen Cupra Born in 9th with 128 sales. Rounding out the Top Ten is the BYD Dolphin, selling 100 units.

Tesla Model Y

Year to date, however, the Model Y is still the far-and-away leader selling 24,267 units. There’s daylight between it and the 2nd most popular Tesla Model 3, selling 15,718 units.

BYD

The BYD Atto 3, a compact SUV crossover, has sold 9,618 units so far. There’s also a big gap between 3rd and 4th, with 2,549 MG ZS popular EVs being sold, followed by the Volvo XC40 Recharge PE selling 2,434.

Polestar 2, Kia EV6

The Polestar 2 is also relatively popular selling 1,867 cars this year to date; the MG 4 one step behind on 1,692, and the Kia EV6 on 1,367.

As for where EVs are most popular, you’ll be more likely to see an electric car in ACT with 18.6% of sales, followed by NSW on 7.9% share, and Queensland on 7.2%. Victoria was just behind on 7.1% with Tasmania missing out on fourth by point one percentage point (7%).

Tesla the King of Electric Vehicles

Tesla is still the king of sales with 37,997 sold year to date, followed by BYD on 8,706, and MG on 3,279. 

With more models coming to dealerships in Australia, 2024 could be a bumper year for EV sales; improving even on this year!
