Stellantis and Samsung SDI plan second battery gigafactory in the US

Amsterdam-headquartered multinational automaker Stellantis and South Korean EV battery maker Samsung SDI have entered into a provisional agreement under their existing StarPlus Energy joint venture to build a second EV battery factory in the US.

Their first is targeted to launch in the first quarter of 2025 with an annual production of 33 GWh. It is under construction in Kokomo, Indiana.

The second factory, whose location is under review, is expected to start production in early 2027 with an initial annual capacity of 34 GWh. “This new facility will contribute to reaching our aggressive target to offer at least 25 new electric vehicles for the North American market by the end of the decade,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.

Stellantis, under its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, aims to reach a 100% passenger car BEV sales mix in Europe and a 50% passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in the United States by 2030.
