Hydrogen in Aviation

With a number of refineries exploring Sustainable Aviation Fuel options and a role for Hydrogen this report is timely.

Finding low emission ways to decarbonise energy is a global priority, and particularly for the aviation sector to achieve its net zero carbon commitment by 2050. As over three-quarters of the global aviation strategy depends on new fuels and related technology to turn this ambition into reality, sustainable aviation fuels are essential in the flight path to a sustainable future.

The future has to be and will be hydrogen powered aircraft and aircraft design needn't necessarily change things all that much; it even seems to get simpler for long haul aircraft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqMHiyyWlZo&t=1522s

But what synergy prevails in the Rolls-Royce Group - a match made in heaven. Rolls-Royce SMR Ltd. have just completed a study with Sumitomo regarding the manufacture of nuclear enabled hydrogen (NEH) using Sumitomo solid oxide electrolysis, with productivity almost 50% higher than that achievable by wind and solar electrolysers.

This is what NEH can mean for a future [applying to advanced economies at first] free of the 'evils' of burning fossil fuels: https://energycentral.com/c/ec/how-nuclear-enabled-hydrogen-neh-will-save-planet

And this is how Rolls-Royce SMRs can 'enrich' the UK in terms of billions of £s and reductions in premature deaths and vile illnesses: https://energycentral.com/c/ec/cost-powering-uk-smrs-neh-2x-better-zero-sum-game
