First transatlantic commercial flight fueled with 100% SAF!

Today (November 28), Virgin Atlantic flew one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners across the Atlantic Ocean on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The plane used 60 metric tons of SAF — a combination of 88 percent hydro processed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) fuel and 12 percent synthetic aromatic kerosene. The flight is the first commercial airline to fly a passenger plane across the Atlantic with fossil-free jet fuel. According to this revealing story, by Canary Media Inc.'s Maria Gallucci, SAF can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from flying by over 70 percent when compared to fossil jet fuel.  Globally, air travel accounts for about 2 percent of annual energy-related CO2 emissions. If you are curious to how large a 787 Dreamliner is, the maximum design take-off weight ranges between 502,500 – 561,500 lbs (227,930 – 254,692 kg) . . . that’s more than 250 tons at takeoff!

Lots of coverage of this exciting story! I've also seen the headlines about the experimental new flights that NASA is looking to get across the Atlantic in 90 minutes. I have to imagine, from a sustainability standpoint, those flights are going in the opposite direction. Of course both types are also going to be noticeable in price increases-- will be interesting what the ultimate commercial demand is for both of them at the respective price points.
