Sion Power, Muhlbauer to create manufacturing line for lithium metal EV battery cells

US-based EV battery developer Sion Power has formed a partnership with MB ATECH, the e-mobility division of Germany’s Muhlbauer Group, to create an automated manufacturing line for Sion Power’s large-format lithium metal cells for EV batteries.

The new fully automated manufacturing line will advance Sion Power’s commercialization, producing 75 MWh of 56 Ah lithium metal cells annually.

Sion will provide the cells to automotive OEMs, cell manufacturers and potential customers to fully test its Licerion technology. Licerion lithium metal batteries offer specific energy of to 500 Wh/kg. They are designed to increase EV driving range or maximize the use of energy per unit weight when compared to conventional lithium-ion cells, according to Sion.

“Leveraging Sion Power’s expertise in the future battery technology and Mühlbauer’s technical expertise in special machine and serial production, the rapid growth of the battery industry enables advancements to next-generation technologies in notching, stacking and cell assembly,” said Josef Markus Mühlbauer, General Manager of MB ATECH.
