The Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR), known as “America’s Seed Fund,” provides nondilutive grants to small businesses to help them develop and commercialize technology innovations. The Department of Energy’s SBIR/STTR FY24 solicitation has released the funding topics and will  soon release the funding opportunity announcement (FOA). A brief Letter of Intent is due on January 3, 2024, with full applications due on February 21, 2024.

The Clean Energy Business Network is a nationwide nonprofit that serves as the small business voice for the clean energy economy. Our team is working as a Power Connector on this prize to help reach new applicants and provide resources and support.

Timeline

FY24 SBIR/STTR Phase I Release 2 Timeline:

  • November 6, 2023: Topics Available
  • December 11, 2023:  Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) Available (DELAYED)
  • January 3, 2024 at 5pm ET: Letter of Intent (LOI) Due
  • January 23, 2024: Non-Responsiveness Feedback Provided
  • February 21, 2024 at 11:59pm ET: Full Application Due
  • May 20, 2024: Award Notification

SBIR/STTR Training Series: Preparing the Letter of Intent

The University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) and Clean Energy Business Network (CEBN) invite first time and relatively new applicants to join us for a series of events to help you prepare your Letter of Intent for the Department of Energy’s Small Business Innovation Research / Small Business Technology Transfer funding opportunity. Participants may register for any or all events.

      • Learn—Dec. 19, 2023 from 11:00 am-12:00 pm ET: In this training, UACI will review the current Department of Energy Phase 1 SBIR/STTR Funding Opportunity Announcement and how to prepare a Letter of Intent.
      • Practice—Dec. 20, 2023 from 3:00-4:30 pm ET: The following day, CEBN will help you put this knowledge into practice with a hands-on workshop giving you suggested prompts to get started on drafting your LOI, and walking you through the online registration process in PAMS. You will leave this event with your draft application materials in hand, providing ample time for edits and troubleshooting ahead of the submission deadline (Jan. 3, 2024).
      • Get Help—Dec. 22, 2023 and Jan. 2, 2024 from 11:00 am-12:00 pm ET: In these open office hours sessions, the UACI team will be available to answer questions related to preparing your Letter of Intent. Registration forthcoming.

Technical Assistance:

  • First-time applicants: Apply for free technical assistance from DOE’s Phase 0 Dawnbreaker program starting November 6 to help you prepare a winning application once topics are released. Also access their free tutorials and resources for submitting your SBIR application at any time.
  • CEBN: We have been supporting applicants for SBIR/STTR over the past three years. Make sure you’re on our list for updates on office hours, webinars, and other resources.
  • Arrowhead Center Applicant Resources: New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead program has useful resources on SBIR programs at different agencies, including the DOE. View checklists, template forms, and more on the Arrowhead Resources page.
  • Local programs: Reach out to your nearest Federal and State (FAST) Partnership Program and other local resources to find out what types of support they offer.
