BMW opens second battery module production line at Plant Leipzig

BMW has launched its second battery module production line at Plant Leipzig in Germany. In May of 2021, BMW opened its first battery module production line at Plant Leipzig to manufacture modules for the BMW iX.

BMW says approximately €70 million ($71.2 million) has been invested in the production line.

“The BMW Group sources its battery cells from partners who produce them to the company’s exact specifications,” says the company. The second production line has roughly 4,250 square meters of production system space, which uses some areas formerly used for the BMW i3 and 196 production stations to produce modules for the BMW i4 EV.

“The gradual expansion of e-component production is taking the BMW Group ever closer to its goal for 2030, when fully electric models are expected to account for at least half of the BMW Group’s sales,” says the company.
